Is there a second verse to the Itsy Bitsy Spider?
Not officially. The traditional rhyme is a single verse, but families and teachers often repeat it with a new spider, such as a great big one sung in a deep voice or a teeny tiny one sung in a squeak.
The most common second verse
Swap the first and last lines: “The great big spider climbed up the water spout…” Everything else stays the same, but you use huge arms and a deep voice. Follow it with the teeny tiny spider, using two fingers and your smallest voice.
Let your child write verse three
Ask what other spider could climb the spout. A sleepy spider who yawns? A hungry spider? A spider called Grandma? Sing whatever they choose. Making a small change like this is a first step in writing poetry.
