How do I make up a rhyme with my child?
Start with something your child did today, then find two words that rhyme. It doesn’t have to be clever or even make sense, and a silly rhyme usually gets remembered best.
Three steps
First, pick a real subject, like the dog or the blue cup. Second, say the word and hunt for rhymes together, including made-up ones: dog, log, frog, zog. Third, make two short lines ending in those words: “My dog sat on a log. He said hello to a frog.” You’ve written a poem.
Keep it going
Clap the beat as you say it. Write it down and read it back at bedtime. Children are delighted to hear their own words treated like a real book, and seeing their words written down shows them what writing is for.
